Artificial Intelligence, (AI), has the potential to affect mankind in the way the Internet did in the early ’80’s. Today, the general population are largely ignorant about what AI is, how it already is being used, and how much potential it has to change the way we work, we shop, we live, into the future. A few pioneers around the planet are helping shape the way AI can be useful in making our lives easier across many industries. Nishan Silva is one such pioneer, who has made it his mission to understand how AI can be used for the betterment of the hotel industry. Nishan and I have worked together across three companies over the past twenty years. I have seen him develop from an excuberant Food and Beverage Manager into a seasoned General Manager and now a super successful Regional General Manager, and I have always been impressed by his creativity, his enthusiasm, his intelligence and his dedication to the customer experience. Someone once said….”creativity is intelligence having fun”. In Nishan’s case this is so true! Anyone who aspires to be a success in the hotel industry in the future needs to know about AI, and how it can be used to improve the business of hotels and the experiences of the customer. I commend Nishan on his initiative to not only gain the highest level of knowledge on the subject from the worlds’ best universities, but also in his endeavour to pass on his knowledge so that future leaders in the industry can benefit from his expertise.

A Ten-Year Outlook on the Role and Importance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Automation in High-End Hotels
Research shows that AI and Automation are expected to replace about 25% of the hospitality workforce by 2030, and Data Science is taking a center stage in the business of hospitality. Whilst human touch is essential in guest experience, hotel operations and back-end functions must proactively seek to develop innovative adaptation of AI and Automation to ensure sustainable competitive advantage

A system (machines or software) is able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, ideally for problem solving. Machine Learning is a sub-set of AI and there are other forms of AI, which are Natural Language Processing (NLP) such as vision, text to speech and Robotics.
Most common area is revenue optimization. The booking engines use past data, current trends, local and regional events and social media to predict the future pricing decisions using automation. Chatbots and virtual assistants are commonly used in hotels for guest services areas. We see property maintenance use AI to reduce utility costs and carbon emissions. One of the most recent development in hotels is the use of generative AI (Chat GPT & BARD) for content creation ( texts, images, videos ), establish demand trends, language translation and personalized guest experience.
Data Science is finding patterns in data, training Machine Learning modeling and executing AI applications. Related to the general concept of AI and data science has also become important in the hotel industry. Few contemporary analyses have been published on data science for hospitality and tourism (Rita et al., 2018). Researchers have determined that there has been an increase in the use of data science in the hospitality industry and is constantly evolving. The data from guests feedback has been key to developing sustainable decision-making (Moro et al., 2017). For instance, online reviews provide a means of understanding and taking action based on consumer perceptions. Data mining has been used for both decision-making and marketing, as it allows companies to identify, reach, and understand potential customers (Moro et al., 2017).
Artificial intelligence and robotic applications have been shown to enhance guest experiences and are predicted to make up about 25% of the hospitality workforce by the 2030s. From my own research, the study found that AI plays a role in forecasting and predicting customer needs. Participants of the study generally agreed that automated solutions helped to make quick decisions through fast and accurate analysis. This revelation coincided with those by Alotaibi (2020) and Casteleiro-Roca et al. (2019), who elucidated that using AI in hotels as enabled by machine learning algorithms helps predict the data, which could lead to faster and more accurate analysis. In particular, Al Shehhi and Karathanasopoulos (2020) found that AI and machine learning are applied in forecasting hotel room prices in selected GCC cities using deep learning. The hotel operations, revenue management, digital marketing, guest experience, finance and data security & privacy would be greatly positively impacted by AI and automation in the future.
