Artificial Intelligence, (AI), has the potential to affect mankind in the way the Internet did in the early ’80’s. Today, the general population are largely ignorant about what AI is, how it already is being used, and how much potential it has to change the way we work, we shop, we live, into the future. A few pioneers around the planet are helping shape the way AI can be useful in making our lives easier across many industries. Nishan Silva is one such pioneer, who has made it his mission to understand how AI can be used for the betterment of the hotel industry. Nishan and I have worked together across three companies over the past twenty years. I have seen him develop from an excuberant Food and Beverage Manager into a seasoned General Manager and now a super successful Regional General Manager, and I have always been impressed by his creativity, his enthusiasm, his intelligence and his dedication to the customer experience. Someone once said….”creativity is intelligence having fun”. In Nishan’s case this is so true! Anyone who aspires to be a success in the hotel industry in the future needs to know about AI, and how it can be used to improve the business of hotels and the experiences of the customer. I commend Nishan on his initiative to not only gain the highest level of knowledge on the subject from the worlds’ best universities, but also in his endeavour to pass on his knowledge so that future leaders in the industry can benefit from his expertise.

Hotel General Manager’s of 2030
Research shows that AI and Automation are expected to replace about 25% of the hospitality workforce by 2030, and Data Science is taking a center stage in the business of hospitality. Whilst human touch is essential in guest experience, hotel operations and back-end functions must proactively seek to develop innovative adaptation of AI and Automation to ensure sustainable competitive advantage

AI plays a transformative role across the entire guest journey. It simplifies trip planning through intelligent recommendations, improves booking accuracy through conversational chatbots, and enhances on-property experience through personalisation engines. Behind the scenes, AI optimises revenue management, energy consumption, preventive maintenance, and staff allocation. In essence, AI ensures operations run smoother while delivering more memorable stays.
Today, AI is already embedded in multiple hotel functions:
Smart pricing and forecasting used by commercial teams.
AI-powered CRM that recommends personalised upsells and offers.
Operational automation like intelligent housekeeping scheduling.
Reputation management analysing online reviews across platforms.
Energy management systems that optimise consumption based on occupancy.
Food waste analytics using image recognition.
This makes hotels more efficient, sustainable, and guest-centric.
The future will be defined by hyper-personalisation and predictive service. Guests’ preferences, dietary restrictions, room settings, and travel patterns will be understood before they arrive. AI will also play a key role in sustainability, carbon tracking, and zero-waste operations. On the commercial side, AI-driven forecasting will become the backbone of decision-making. In luxury and midscale hotels alike, AI will become an invisible partner supporting every touchpoint.
AI will reshape, not reduce the workforce. Routine and administrative tasks will be automated, but human roles will become more service-oriented, creative, and strategic. New positions will emerge in data analysis, digital guest experience, AI operations, and sustainability. The most competitive hotels will be those that upskill their teams early, enabling staff to work alongside AI tools to deliver high-impact, high-touch hospitality.
