AI and Data Science in Hospitality: Frequently Asked Questions
Explore key questions surrounding AI and data science in the hospitality industry. Learn about AI applications in revenue optimization, guest services, property maintenance, and content creation from one of the well-known AI speakers in Dubai. Discover how data science drives decision-making and marketing strategies in hotels, while also anticipating the future impact of AI on the hospitality business.
1
What is the definition of Artificial Intelligence?
A system (machines or software) is able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, ideally for problem solving. Machine Learning is a sub-set of AI and there are other forms of AI, which are Natural Language Processing (NLP) such as vision, text to speech and Robotics.
2
What are the types of AI available in hotels?
Most common area is revenue optimization. The booking engines use past data, current trends, local and regional events and social media to predict the future pricing decisions using automation. Chatbots and virtual assistants are commonly used in hotels for guest services areas. We see property maintenance use AI to reduce utility costs and carbon emissions. One of the most recent development in hotels is the use of generative AI (Chat GPT & BARD) for content creation ( texts, images, videos ), establish demand trends, language translation and personalized guest experience.

What is the definition of Data Science and what can it do in hotels?
Data Science is finding patterns in data, training Machine Learning modeling and executing AI applications. Related to the general concept of AI and data science has also become important in the hotel industry. Few contemporary analyses have been published on data science for hospitality and tourism (Rita et al., 2018). Researchers have determined that there has been an increase in the use of data science in the hospitality industry and is constantly evolving. The data from guests feedback has been key to developing sustainable decision-making (Moro et al., 2017). For instance, online reviews provide a means of understanding and taking action based on consumer perceptions. Data mining has been used for both decision-making and marketing, as it allows companies to identify, reach, and understand potential customers (Moro et al., 2017).

How is AI is going to change hospitality business in the future?
Artificial intelligence and robotic applications have been shown to enhance guest experiences and are predicted to make up about 25% of the hospitality workforce by the 2030s. From my own research, the study found that AI plays a role in forecasting and predicting customer needs. Participants of the study generally agreed that automated solutions helped to make quick decisions through fast and accurate analysis. This revelation coincided with those by Alotaibi (2020) and Casteleiro-Roca et al. (2019), who elucidated that using AI in hotels as enabled by machine learning algorithms helps predict the data, which could lead to faster and more accurate analysis. In particular, Al Shehhi and Karathanasopoulos (2020) found that AI and machine learning are applied in forecasting hotel room prices in selected GCC cities using deep learning. The hotel operations, revenue management, digital marketing, guest experience, finance and data security & privacy would be greatly positively impacted by AI and automation in the future.
